'LIVE' Coverage of Chelsea v Benfica

Chelsea vs Benfica

Champions League Quarter Final Second Leg

Back through popular demand (two comments saying that it wasn't actually that bad a job) my 'live' coverage is going to be my next blog update. Chelsea are looking to secure their place in the semi finals and are in a strong position to do so. The first game resulted in a win for Chelsea and they have the away goal in their favour, but tonight's game will be no walkover as Benfica beat Manchester United, which is no easy feat. But with the form of Chelsea improving under the interim coach Roberto de Matteo this could be an easy win for a much improved Chelsea team.

Chelsea start with a 4-2-3-1 formation with Petr Cech between the sticks, a back 4 of Ivanovic, Terry, David Luiz and Cole, a 2 man defensive shield of Mikel and Lampard, Kalou, Ramires and Mata playing a more advanced role and Torres playing the lone striker.

Benfica start with a 4-3-3 formation with Artur in goal, a denfence with no real centre back of Emerson, Perriera, Capdevila and Garcia. A midfield three of Cesar, Matic and Witsel and front three of Gaitan, Cardozo and Aimar. With no real centre back playing for Benfica they could be out classed by Chelsea's forwards we'll just have to see as the game goes on.

min : The game' has kicked off.

min : Benfica have lots of space in and around the Chelsea box but the threat is eventually stopped.

min: Benfica force a corner and their fans cheer wildly, Aimar's delivery is cleared away.

min : Benfica again threaten with Cardozo threading a ball through and Lampard blocks a shot just in time. Benfica really threatening Chelsea at the moment.

min : Good work from Mata and Ramires sees them break into the benfica half but Torres' first touch is poor and is cleared by the makeshift centre back Emerson.

min : Mata flagged offside, he would have been two on one with Torres as well.

min : Chelsea corner to be taken by Mata, Ever Benfica player in the box.

min : Capdevila brilliantly prevents David Luiz's shot who really should have scored.

min : Cardozo complains to the referee about a challenge, to be fair he was the one backing into Terry, ref got it spot on.

min : Noticing Torres seems to drift all over the place, was it maybe a mistake to play him up alone?

min : He nearly contradicted my point, with Mata playing a great ball but Torres couldn't get there.

min : Goal by Mata ruled offside, just seen the replay and the linesman got it right, at least a yard offside.

min : Benfica playing some really intricate football at the moment, Chelsea holding strong however.

min : Benfica get a throw after more great play, cleared straight away by Chelsea.

min : Chelsea's turn to play some nice football and force a throw that eventually comes to nothing.

min : Bruno Cesar for Benfica is down after a fair tackle from Cole, I think it was his landing that made him stay down.

min : Gaitan nearly in, Cech has to come out and clear.

min : Oscar Cardozo becomes the first booking of the night after a late lunge on David Luiz.

min : PENALTY CHELSEA! Ashley Cole bundled over by Javier Garcia the centre back. Correct call again. Benfica's captain goes in the book as well for dissent.

min : GOAL! But only just. Lampard slots it in the bottom left corner keeper guesses right but doesn't keep it out, but I really can't see how he couldn't. 1-0 Chelsea.

min : Benfica a bit shell shocked at the moment and playing more cautiously than at the start.

min : Torres blatantly fouled right in front of the ref, no decision but the Benfica counter results in nothing.

min : Cardozo tries a speculative drive that goes one or two yards over the bar.

min : Torres gets a great break through the defence but looks for the pass rather than shooting. The resulting corner results in nothing.

min : Aimar in the book, the ref isn't taking any messing tonight.

min : David Luiz over runs the ball in his own half and Benfica should really have done better with the chance.

min : 3 men standing over the free kick and a GREAT chance just goes begging. Alves chips it over the defence, two benfica players head it on to Cardozo who volleys it goalwards beats the keeper but not John Terry who expertly blocks it. he then has another great chance but mistimes his run and is caught offside.

min : Super Franky Lampard takes a tumble, cue over the top laughing from my family.

min : Aimar whips a shot at the Chelsea goal but Cech takes it very comfortably.

min : Kalou wastes a Chelsea chance and Benfica are very nearly through on goal but are guilty of overplaying the ball and Chelsea clear.

min : Aimar's delivery cleared away by Lampard at the front post then win a free kick for a supposed foul.

min : We definitely have a whistle happy ref, no wonder Wenger wasn't too happy with him. This fact by the way has been repeated by the ITV commentators already nearly 5 times.

min : Benfica have a great free kick position given to them by Ivanovic, who thusly goes into the book.

min : Free kick straight at the wall. Cech then catches the second delivery with ease.

min : Wow. Maxi Perreira is off after a mistimed lunge on Mikel. His previous card was for dissent, quite an unnecessary sending off and he should be quite annoyed at himself for that.

min : Mata again ruled offside and again is indeed the right decision.

min : Ramires plays a brilliant ball across the six yard box but neither Torres nor Kalou can reach it.

min : Ramires now in the book. I've forgotten who else has received them in this game. 7 yellows already.

min : Referee is really, really poor, free kick for nothing. And again Torres has looked for the pass instead of shooting, he still looks scared to do so. 2 minutes of added time.

+1 min : Aimar wins another free kick, but no card for Kalou, another poor call but this time the other way around.

+2 min : Punched away by Cech, Mata looked to break but over hit his pass and the referee blows for half time.

That means Chelsea are 2-0 up on Aggregate and look set to play Barcelona in the Semi Finals. One moment of madness from the Benfica captain looks to have ruined their chances in this game, but nothing is a given.

Quite angered I don't have Sky, now I have to put up with the ITV 'expert coverage and analysis' mind you Roy Keane and Gareth Southgate aren't that bad, can't stand Chiles though.

For those it may concern, at the time of writing Madrid are 5-0 up on aggregate against APOEL.

And the game is back under way thanks to Benfica.

min : Kalou tries a shot and forces a corner. Good work from Chelsea in the build up.

min : Terry wins the header but his shot goes miles wide.

Thanks to this ingenious fact from the commentary team where to score two they'd win. NO WAY!

min : Cardozo blasts a curling effort away at the Chelsea goal and Cech does brilliantly to save it, Benfica corner.

min : Aimar this time to shoot and he hits the side netting.

min : Unbelievable. Kalou drives a ball across the Benfica goal with Ramires running onto it and he somehow manages to miss from two yards out. That miss was Torres-esque.

min : Cheeky effort from Cardozo at the halfway line, goes high and wide unfortunately for him.

min : SO CLOSE! Torres turns away from Emerson and shoots but Emerson sticks his foot out and just about forces it wide. Corner results in nothing.

min : Great work from Mata sees him beat his man and deliver and inviting ball just for Kalou to head wide. Poor play from him there.

min : Mata and Torres exchange balls (Oh har har) before Mata cracks off a shot which the Benfica keeper does well to save before Torres tries but fails to score, yet again.

min : First sub off the night coming from Benfica. Oliviera on for Cardozo.

min : Now a Chelsea sub, Captain Terry comes off for Gary Cahill.

min : Lampard slices a wild attempt, goes way wide of the target and now the second Benfica sub, Djalo comes on for Gaitan.

min : The heads of the Benfica players have definitely dropped, they don't look the same team who caused Chelsea so many problems in the first half.

min : Capdevila does well with his build up play but skys his shot. Poor.

min : Some very lazy Chelsea defending sees Benfica create a chance that is just denied by Cahill's boot.

min : Cesar gets the ball to him in the box but heads weakly at Cech.

min : Kalou should do much better after Mata's great build up play but he shoots straight at the defender.

min : Torres heads wide from Ramires' cross, should do better.

min : Great play from Mata as he reaches Kalou's through ball but fires just wide.

min : Cross from Oliviera safely collected by Cech, who has had a great game so far.

min : Luiz does well to thwart a threatening Benfica move, he's also not had too many brainless moments this game, which can only be a positive. And now the final Benfica sub Machado comes on for Bruno Cesar.

min : Capdevila puts in a brilliant cross only for Djalo to head wide, he should be doing much, much better from there.

min : Ashley Cole again causing problems down the left this time he hits a low ball into the box but Kalou can't finish his shot.

min : Oliviera again causing problems, his acute shot is saved by Cech's legs, pressure building on the London team now.

min : This time Oliviera gets the ball 25 yards out but his shot is poor and goes way wide.

min : Mikel becomes the latest man in the refs book for a late trip on Rodrigo. Mata comes off for Meireles before the subsequent free kick can be taken. Cahnce comes to nothing.

min : game is slowing down now and Benfica badly need a goal if they are to stand any sort of chance in the remainder of the game.

min : Chelsea keeping posession well and look certain to progress to the next stage of the competition.

min : SO CLOSE! Witsel's cross finds Djalo whose header is flying towards the corner only for Petr Cech to make a fantastic save to deny him.

min : GOLAGOLAGOLA GOALLLL!!! Garcia totally unmarked in the Chelsea box nods in for his team after a great delivery from Witsel. GAME ON!

min : The anxiety around the ground is unbearable, as is the ITV commentary. Make it stop!

min : Chelsea bring on Drogba in place of Fernando Torres, probably to run down the clock.

min : There is to be 4 minutes of time to be added with Benfica desperately searching for goal number two.

+1 min : Benfica have a free kick 40 yards out could really threaten Chelsea at this late stage. Mikel heads away.

+2 min : GOALLLLLLLLLLL!!! Chelsea on the counter with Meireles who beats his man before thundering home to make the score 2-1 on the night. That was unstoppable.

+3 min : Aimar tries in vain from distance, no chance.

+4 min : And it's all over. Chelsea are through to the Semi Finals of the Champions League with a 3-1 win (over two legs) against Benfica, and are set to face Barcelona. A cracking game as I'm sure those who saw it will agree but Chelsea will need to improve drastically if they want to stand any chance against Barcelona in the next round.

In the other game tonight Real Madrid beat Apoel 5-2 and 8-2 on aggregate.

Jorge Jesus and Roberto Di Matteo have a nice chat before kick off.

Lampard celebrates his converted penalty infront of the Chelsea fans.

Maxi Perreira is sent off after his second bookable offence in the 40th minute

Javi Garcia rises highest to put Benfica level and make it a far tenser affair.

But Raul Meireles scored a fine goal wrapping up the tie for his side.

Thanks again for reading my blog and I hope you enjoyed reading it. I will be doing my first weekend round up for a while on Monday so until then, Adios mis Amigos.
