Here is how Group A finished :
So despite an atrocious 4-1 loss to Russia in the first game, The Czechs top the group with six points after back to back wins against Greece and Poland.
However, what is even more incredible is that the most tedious team in the tournament, Greece, are through to the quarters, beating the group favorites Russia 1-0 and going through on head to head record, an incredible escape, seeing as they played the 'mighty' Giorgio Samaras up front.
This is hugely disappointing for both the two teams knocked out as they were mostly the better teams but at the end of the day, you have to put away your chances, which the profligate Polish and Russians didn't (The Russian profligacy mostly coming from Zenit striker Kerzhakov)
Player of the group : Petr Jiracek
The crusading wing back caused havoc for the defences of Greece and Poland and got a vital goal in both games, his link up play with his team mate Pilar was also sublime. Kudos also goes to Arshavin, Dzagoev and Lewandowski, who were all brilliant throughout.
Here is how Group B turned out :
The German's rightly top the group with Portugal a close second. Denmark could have been the suprise package had they held on against Portugal in the second round of games but a late goal from Varela gave the Portuguese a vital win. The shock of this group was the total failure of the Dutch to earn a single point. Despite being in the world cup final two years ago and being tipped as joint favorites, the Dutch failed to muster any real challenge to any team other than Denmark, who held on fantastically.
Player of the group : Mario Gomez
This lad had 8 seconds of possession against the Dutch in the second game and scored two goals. The man has certainly changed a great deal since his awful Champions League showing huge technique and style, so much so the Germans have hardly missed the huge presence of Miroslav Klose. Special mentions go to Varela, Bendtner and Sneijder.
Group C ended up like this :
Tiki taka Spain top the group after two wins and a draw, Italy also unbeaten with a win and two draws, just behind them are Croatia who won one, drew one and lost one and the ROI, the group whipping boys, who lost all three of their games.
It was unlucky for Croatia, my favorites, as they came so close to escaping but I doubt many countries would have fared so well in a group of this stature.
Player of the group : Mario Mandzukic
This lad was heroic. Netting twice against Ireland with two quality headers (although the second did come with a slice of luck) and also stunning Italy with a thumping goal to keep them in contention. His work rate is astonishing and will alert some of the big guns in Europe to his availability with a showing like that. Special mentions to Iniesta, Torres, Balotelli (for that goal) and De Rossi.
And Group D finished like this :
Roy Hodgson's England top the group with solid, team performances, especially against Sweden in the 3-2 win. France progress despite being bullied in their final game with Sweden 2-0. Ukraine's exit means both the co-hosts are out of the tournament but they will cherish these moments for s long time.
Player of the group : Steven Gerrard
The England captain has shown Roy why he was right to give him the captaincy after his mighty displays in the groups. He provided the assist for Lescott against France, for Carroll against Sweden and Rooney against Ukraine, all influential goals. Special mentions go to Welbeck, Shevchenko and Ibrahimovic.
