Euro 2012 LIVE Coverage : Holland vs Denmark and Germany vs Portugal

Hello again and welcome to my live coverage of Euro 2012. Today, it is the turn of the 'Group of death' as World cup finalists Holland play Denmark and favourites Germany face a tough Portugal team straight after. If it's half as good as yesterday's football then we're in for a treat.

The other game from Group A yesterday saw Russia take on the Czech Republic and it's fair to say they demolished them.

Russia 4 - 1 Czech Republic

Russia were slow to get into the game but when they did they blew away the Czechs. Alan Dzagoev scored first after the profligate striker Kerzhakov headed against the post. 5 minutes later the Russians doubled their lead through Roman Shirikov after he was brilliantly played in by Arshavin. The Czechs looked to be back in it after Pilar rounded the keeper and tapped in but two goals in the second half from Dzagoev and Pavlyuchenko put the game out of sight.

After the game, Russia's manager Dick Advocaat said that his team had to be 'sharper' despite winning 4-1. He said "We could have scored more goals, in fact we should have scored lots more goals as we had a lot of chances.
"At 2-1 we made it very difficult for ourselves so we have to get better at that because maybe a better team would have scored more against us.
"It could have been 2-2, there were moments where we need to be sharper, at certain points they had a lot of space and were very dangerous.

In other news, Robin van Persie's father Bob van Persie says that his son will not move to another Premier League club.

"He'd never go to Manchester City as it's impossible he would play for another Premier League side that wasn't Arsenal.
"It would make no sense to go to Barcelona when they've already got Leo Messi.
"Real Madrid would be a good option, but they are not so much a team as a collection of star names, so he wouldn't really fit in there either."

Robin van Persie : Going nowhere.
 Another man who's going nowhere is Tim Krul the Newcastle and Holland goalkeeper. He has dismissed rumors of a move to Tottenham or Chelsea saying ;

"It's all just talk,"
"I've signed my five-year contract and I'm committed to Newcastle United.
"The club has not played in Europe for six years and I want to be a part of that.
"This club deserves European football. We've got everything: the stadium, the fans and an owner in Mike Ashley who's backing us."

Krul wants to stay put too.
Team news from the first group B game is in.

Holland - Stekelenburg, Van der Viel, Heitinga, Vlaar, Willems, Van Bommel, de Jong, Robben, Sneijder, Afellay, Van Persie.

Man to Watch - Robin van Persie

Van Persie is just one of many world class players in this Holland team, but the thing that sets him apart is his goal scoring record, 30 goals in the league for Arsenal this season. He will show his class and quality today for sure.

Denmark - Andersen, Poulsen, Agger, Kjaer, Jacobsen, Zimling, Kvist, Krohn-Dehl, Eriksen, Rommedahl, Bendtner.

Man to Watch - Cristian Eriksen

Eriksen is a creative playmaker masterclass. He proved just how good he is against Manchester United and against England last season, and he's only 20 years old. Watch his passing and movement throughout the game and you'll see why Europe's top clubs are chasing him.

The players are out on the pitch. Kick off moments away.

1 min : The game is off. Holland start the procedings.

2 min : Denmark have a free kick.... Daniel Agger heads weakly at Stekelenburg who catches easily.

3 min : Van der Wiel and Robben link up well before Van der Wiel squares the ball to Willems who takes a touch before blasting just over the bar.

5 min : Van Persie heads down excellently to Afellay but it bounces awkwardly and he can't hit the target.

7 min : Chance wasted there by Holland. Robben does well down the wing and plays in an excellent ball to Van Persie but he misses badly.

9 min : Holland dominating the game now, Afellay has a chance but he over hits his curling effort.

11 min : Excellent move by the Dutch, van Persie plays a delightful ball into the box but Snijder misses the header, goal definitely coming for the Dutch.

12 min : van Persie wins a free kick and stands over it now.... hits the wall but Snijder forces a corner.

13 min : Corner is over hit and van Bommel skies it from outside the box.

15 min : Robben twists and turns before firing a shot away but the keeper holds it with ease.

18 min : Robben links excellently with van Persie and is released down the right but his ball across the box is expertly dealt with by Jacobsen and the keeper can gather.

20 min : Robben forces a corner, Snijder to take........ straight to the keeper.

22 min : Dutch in so much control, the young Eriksen or Bendtner will have to pull something out of a hat to get a result here as van Persie again comes close.

GOAL!!!! DENMARK!!! Krone Delhi! Incredible. Completely against the run of play he completely fools the Dutch defence before slotting the ball through Skelekenburg's legs. 1-0.

Krone Dahl scores a goal out of the blue...

...And sends his fans into a frenzy.

27 min : The Dutch are completely shell shocked, so am I in truth, how did that come about?

28 min : Handball appeal for the dutch with the ball clearly striking Poulsen's arm.

29 min : Barcelona's Afellay nearly took out by his team mate as he went for goal, but no matter he's back on now.

32 min : Game slowing down but Dutch still indefintely in control.

34 min : Denmark playing the ball around nicely by the Dutch area, reminding them not to under estimate them.

36 min : Robben gets a gift of a ball from the Denmark keeper and he strikes the post with his curling attempt, so close.

38 min : I've changed my mind, watch this Afellay fella, another missed attempt but he did a lot of work in the build up.

40 min : Zimling releases a volley but Jonny Heitinga is equal to it, blocking it away.

42 min : Rohme Dehli again this time. a direct run into the box but the keeper saves well from his shot.

43 min : Straight up the other end van Persie has a great chance but his touch gives the keeper a chance to save, Snijder then has a curling effort that drifts wide.

45 min : 1 minute of stoppage time.

Half Time

First half is over and it's not the story you were expecting, Denmark lead the Netherlands 1-0 at the break.

We're back playing now and it is Denmark to restart the game for us.

46 min ; Van Persie nearly played in by Afellay but he is barged off the ball by the dirty Danny Agger.

47 min : Robben has a shot blocked superbly by the right back of Denmark and wins a corner. Comes to nothing.

49 min : Catastrophic from Robin van Persie, he times his run excellently but he fails to connect with the ball and falls over in a heap.

50 min : The Dutch need to pull their fingers out of their arses and get into the game fully.

51 min : Mark van Bommel has a brilliant shot blocked away by the keeper.

52 min : 2 excellent attempts from Afellay seperated by about 30 seconds, his volley is blocked for the first and his shot for the second just goes wide.

53 min : Jonny Heitinga this time from a corner he goes to the front post a powers a header just over.

56 min : After a brief spell of posession the Danes are now sitting back and inviting pressure from the Dutch. Not the most clever of game plans.

58 min : Dutch free kick, fans getting behind the team now, doesn't change anything though.

61 min ; Dutch free kick nearly worked in but linesman coorrectly gives offside.

63 min : Snijder's ball was perfect, one of many, but Robben squanders the chance with a poor header.

65 min : Holland desperately need a substitution. They look drained and wasting chances left, right and centre isn't helping them.

70 min : And here they come, Huntelaar on for Afellay and Van der vaart for De Jong.

76 min : So many Dutch chances, the  best was when Huntelaar darted through the middle and forced a great save from Andersen, Van Persie concedes a foul in the follow up.

80 min : 10 minutes to go and Holland need something out of the hat to get a result from this game.

84 min : Subtitute for Denmark, Mikealson on for Rohmedahl, also one from the Dutch, Kuyt for Van der Wiel.

86 min : Holland waste another promising position up front, with Huntelaar playing a loose pass aimed for Van Persie but instead he finds Agger.

89 min : Dutch handball shout and you'd have to say now, two clear handballs today and neither given.

90 min : 3 minutes of stoppage time for the dutch to scrape a draw from this...... they can't score from the corner though.

90 +2 min ; Surely last attack of the game and it's over!!! DENMARK WIN!!!

Game over and you have to say incredible performance from Denmark, all their resilience pays of with 3 points and go top of Group B.

My man of the match : Wesley Sneijder

He did face close competition from Danny Agger, Sneijder wins the award for this game. His passing was pinpoint and his runs made many opportunities for his team, he was the only beacon of hope for Holland this game.

Villian of the match : Robin van Persie

Despite me telling you to watch him this game, he had a shocker. Missed chance after glorious chance and was bullied all game by the Danish centre back pairing.

Here, have some pictures.

The Danish players celebrate the goal.

Afellay having a shot under pressure from Agger.

Van Persie and Kjaer battling for posession.

Robben missing the target from a promising area.
Van Persie completely failing to strike the ball.

Now it's time for the second of the Group B games.

Germany vs Portugal

Germany are the team tipped to win the whole competion and I believe they can but they face stern competition in this tie and indeed the tournament from their oppenents Portugal, with the talisman that is Ronaldo.

The teams are :

Germany : Neuer, Boateng, Hummels, Badstuber, Lahm, Khedira, Schweinsteiger, Muller, Ozil, Podolski, Gomez.

Man to watch : Muller/Ozil/Podolski

These three will tear the Portugal defence up, they are all excellent passers, dribblers and goal scorers and they have the big target that is Mario Gomez. It shall be very interesting to see how they play.

Portugal : Patricio; Joao Pereira, Alves, Pepe, Coentrao; Veloso, Moutinho, Meireles; Nani, Postiga, Ronaldo

Man to watch : Joao Moutinho

Moutinho is a star player for Porto with his incisive passing and his excellent forward runs. He is in much the same vein as Eriksen and will be an excellent player to keep your eyes on.

The teams are out and standing for their national anthems, kick off is moments away, let's hope for a thrilling encounter.

1 min : AND WE'RE OFF!

2 min : Mario Gomez goes close with a header but Portugal's keeper catches and holds it. Great cross from Boateng.

3 min : Fabio Coentrao has literally run through half the German team before forcing a corner. Which comes to nothing.

5 min : In about 30 seconds there has been 4 free kicks. Not going to be a very nice game you would think.

8 min : Fairly slow build up for this game but both teams growing as Podolski blasts a side footed shot at Rui Patricio which is saved well.

11 min : Ozil and Podolski team up but Ozil can't get into a shooting position and the attack is stopped.

13 min : First booking of the game as Postiga clashes with Neuer. Nothing too serious.

15 min : Podolski impressing me so far nearly keeps Germany pressing but Gomez takes the ball off him.

17 min : Ronaldo has a few step overs before playing a delightful ball across the box which is missed by everyone and Badstuber has to put it out.

22 min : Germany have the ball in the net but it doesn't count and get a free kick instead.

24 min : Podolski hits it into the wall.

25 min : Germany's passing is superb.

26 min : Muller plays a fantastic ball over to Gomez but the man lacks pace and can't find it.

28 min : Even game so far.

30 min : Ozil plays a simple pass to Podolski but the Arsenal man skies his effort. Awful defending by the way from Portugal.

32 min : Sublime passing from Germany, just playing with Portugal.

33 min : nasty from Schwinstiger there, he avoids a tackle from Joao Moutinho and then plants his studs into his back, and STILL wins a free kick.

36 min : If things stay as they are, Denmark will top the group, not likely to finish that way but it's still pretty impressive.

39 min : Germany missed 2 pretty clear cut chances then. Instead they hit two crosses across the box that went wayward of their targets.

42 min : Nani fouled by Badstuber who gets a yellow card, free kick goes straight into Neuer's arms.

44 min : OH MY GOODNESS!!! PEPE HITS THE BAR! He controls it in the area and fires a shot away that bounces off the underside of the bar. Probably last chance of the half.

45+1 min ; And it is. Half time score Germany 0 - 0 Portugal. Portugal suceeding in their aim to halt the German attack. It all exploded to life and the second half looks set to be very, very interesting.

And we're back! Second half starting with Germany.

45 min : It's back on and Muller gets a chance passes it...Podolski hits it, deflected... Khedira hits it, Corner.

47 min : Long ball directly to Nani, an he skins Lahm before forcing a corner..... Neuer punches clear.

48 min : Coentrao again goes on a run and again causes problems but Ronaldo's shot is weak and Neuer can gather.

50 min : Ronaldo again and Hummels has to clear for a corner.

51 min : Awful corner.

52 min : Ronaldo clears with style from a German free kick. he's been quiet but quietly brilliant.

54 min : Portugal corner, short... cross to Postiga but he's offside.

56 min : Ozil and Podolski linking up well again but the latter is forced out of play by Pepe.

58 min : Muller's ball in but no one can reach it despite it being a fantastic one.

60 min : Moutinho is down recieving treatment after a sneaky stamp from Khedira on his foot but he will rejoin proceedings.

63 min : Boateng prevents an excellent chance for Portugal sliding in to win the ball off Ronaldo after he was beautifully played in by Moutinho.

68 min : Rui Patriscio makes a great take from a threatening cross.

70 min : Oliveira to become the game's first sub, coming on for Postiga who, it's fair to say, played poorly.

GOAL!!! GERMANY!!! GOMEZ!!! Excellent play from Germany and Schwinstieger puts in a deflected cross and Gomez angles his header away from Rui Patriscio. 1-0 Germany.

74 min : Portugal go at it straight from the off and Nani is halted before Merieles blast an angry shot high of the Germany goal.

75 min : Germany corner goes to waste and Portugal break but waste their chance to level.

76 min : Germany 's Muller plays in another excellent ball to the box and whilst Gomez stretches he can't quite reach the ball.

79 min : Now the goalscorer is off for the second highest World Cup goalscorer EVER Miroslav Klose, also a fan's favourite.
81 min : Ronaldo strike a stinging shot which is to hot for Neuer and it's Portugal's corner.

82 min : weak handball shouts from the Portuguese, it wasn't on the replays.

83 min : Portugal corner can they make something of it? No.

84 min : OHH! Nani hits the bar with a cross, blooming hell that was close.

85 min : All Portugal at the moment as they have another corner. that of course goes to waste.

86 min : Nani wastes a chance for Portugal through greed as Ozil is replaced by Toni Kroos.

88 min : BLAST! The substitute Verela doesn't score from a frankly perfect opportunity, Oliviera did well to get it across to him.

90 min : Germany have 3 minutes to hold on for the win.

90+2 min : One minute to go... BLOCKED!! Corner for Portugal.

90+3 min : Bruno Alves' header just goes over, Schwienstiger is down after a colision with Alves. Both are up and so is time. Full Time. Germany 1 - 0 Portugal.

Really tight, anxious game. The difference was a goal from Bayern Munich striker Mario Gomez.

Thank you for joining me for my live coverage and I hope you enjoyed it as much as me.

Dan Broeders

  1. What a shock so far! Denmark beating Holland earlier 1-0! Who would have thought it....

I am currently doing a LIVE coverage aswell, and I am loving your coverage as always Dan! Keep it up!

  2. Great report Dan.

BTW Affelay is potentially the best Dutch football player at the moment. Problem was his lenghty injury but I am sure next year when he is up and running properly you will see what I mean.

The Dutch are at their best in tournaments when under pressure to come up with a result. Would have prefered to play the Portuguese first though since that is more our nemesis than Germany ;-)

    Great reports
